Performance tuning and good practice are often two sides of the same coin. Many of the activities that are considered good practice are promoted exactly because they improve performance. Too often, performance tuning is only considered after a system is production, or when performance has become a critical issue. 

Performance should an acceptance criteria at every stage of a systems design, development and transition into production. The earlier that a performance issues is considered, the easier, and cheaper, it is to address.

Improving performance also improves the stability of a system, making it easier to manage. It can increase the productivity of both the system, and the people who use it; it can postpone the next hardware upgrade. Performance Tuning can have a real, measurable, return on investment.

However, performance improvement is not just a matter of implementing a collection of good practices.  There are no silver bullets, there are no reliable short-cuts.  It requires a methodical scientific approach.  So that as well as resolving your performance problems, you will also understand exactly what was causing them, how the improvement was made.
